APLady Glossary

A

Aces Full
A hand including a full house with three aces and a pair with any face value.

Ace-high
A hand containing an ace but no pair.

Aces Up
A hand containing two pairs, one of them being a pair of aces.

Action
The action taken by a player throughout the game (Example: betting, checking
or raising).

All-In
When a player bets all of their chips.

Ante
A required contribution made at the beginning of a hand.

B

Bad Beat
When a strong hand is beaten by a lucky hand; an unexpected win.

Buy-in
The amount a player “pays” to get into the poker game or tournament.

Blind
A bet made by the two players sitting directly to the dealer’s left hand side. The blind
must be paid at the start of the game before any cards are dealt.

Big Blind
A bet which must be made by the player sitting in the second seat clockwise from the
dealer. The bet must be made before any cards are dealt.

Bluff
To place bets while pretending to have a strong hand.

C

Call
To place a bet equal to the previous one in order to stay in the game.

Check
To abstain from betting during a game. The player can only “Check” when no other players place a bet.

Community Cards
The cards that are dealt in the center of the table in order for players to build and match their hands from that set of cards.

F

Flop
The first three cards which are dealt face up on the table.

Fold
To withdraw from the hand at any given time.

Flush
Five cards of the same suit.

Four of a Kind
Four cards of the same number or face value.

Full House
Any three cards of the same denomination, plus any other two cards of the same number or face value.

H

Hand
The player’s best five cards.

Hole Cards
The two cards being held by the players.

House
The card room where the poker game is taking place.

L

Limit Poker
A game with designated betting and raising betting intervals.

Low Limit
A game where the amounts to be bet are small.

N

No Limit
A version of poker in which a player may bet any given amount at any given time.

P

Pot
The sum of all the bets being wagered during the poker game.

Pot Limit
A game where the maximum bet can equal the pot.

R

Rank
The value of each card and hand. Each card has a suit and rank.

Rebuy
When a player chooses to buy more chips during a tournament.

Ratholing
When a player leaves a game and later reenters with a smaller stack than they had originally.

Rake
Chips taken from the pot by the dealer on behalf of the house. It is usually 5% of the pot.

River
This is the fifth and last card that is given in Hold’em.

Royal Flush
The best hand possible in poker consisting of 10,J,Q,K,A (all of the same suit).

S

Satellite
A small-stakes tournament that allows the player to gain entry into a larger tournament.

Seventh Street

This is the final round of betting in 7 Card Stud and Stud 8 or better.

Shills
Paid props that help start and maintain poker games.

Small Blind

A bet placed by the person seated to the left of the dealer before the cards are being dealt.

Straight
Five consecutive cards of any suit.

Straight Flush
Five consecutive cards of the same suit.

Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same denomination, with two side cards.
